5-Year MD/MPH Basic Degree Requirements

To receive the MPH degree, students are required to satisfactorily complete thirteen courses (including two internships) and complete a thesis.

To complete the 13-course requirement, electives may be chosen from the approved elective list for the MPH Program.  Additional courses at Brown University may count as electives toward the MPH degree, with permission from the Program Director and the student's advisor, if the courses meet the educational objectives of the student.  Students in the combined MD/MPH Program may request that up to four graduate/medical courses, taken previously or concurrently with their Brown MPH enrollment, be counted toward the thirteen-course requirement.  No more than four courses counted toward the MPH degree requirements may be used to fulfill the requirements of the MD or PLME.

MPH Thesis

All MPH students are required to complete a thesis. There are no formal requirements for a candidacy examination in order to progress to writing a Master’s thesis for the MPH degree. Therefore, development of a Master’s thesis is an ongoing process during the student’s academic program.  Students must submit their completed, approved (by the thesis advisor, thesis reader and MPH Program Director) MPH Thesis by the required thesis submission date established annually by the Brown Graduate school in the spring.  In addition to the written thesis, students will also present their thesis at an event organized in the spring of their thesis submission.
